Choosing Your E-Commerce Platform

Let’s start from the beginning. E-Commerce is essentially selling consumer goods or services online. It is important to be thoughtful in selecting a platform to host your products because you want to make sure it makes sense for the type of store you need, and the features you want.

There are tons of e-commerce platforms, but I’ll show you the pros and cons of the five most popular.

Shopify:This takes the number one spot because it is my favorite. It is used by a lot of your favorite brands and big-box retailers due to its efficiency, and plugins to increase scaling. It also includes hosting and security, plus don’t have to know how to code to build your site. The downside is that it is costly in comparison to other platforms.

Woo Commerce:If you’re familiar with WordPress, Woo Commerce is its e-commerce platform. It is pretty cost-effective, and you have the ability to take charge of your template, hosting, security, compliance, and plugins. You do need to have an understanding of code or hire a designer who does to create your store.

Wix:This platform is great for beginners, but it has its limitations. For one, customers aren’t able to login to the site, which doesn’t help with retention. On the flip side, there are tons of templates to choose from with drag and drop customization features. All in all, it may be a good platform to test the waters as a new business owner.

Squarespace:It has really great templates and a lower price point than most platforms, however, it is missing a few payment options and the ability to add extra functionality with plugins. It is more ideal for service-based businesses instead of online stores.

Big Commerce:This platform is known for its mobile-friendly layouts. It also has great templates that are customizable with or without code. As the name may suggest, the price point makes it a bit more attractive to bigger businesses versus small businesses.
